One of my first significant stunt jobs was for Academy Award Winning Director, Clint Eastwood, in a film called Letters From Iwo Jima.
I got to do a cool stunt where we run from a shed filled with 2 tubs of diesel fuel with 6 sticks of dynamite each. I remember standing next to it and thinking to myself, “Oh! That s@*# is real.”

A slight correction. The Stunt Coordinator on the show was Buddy Van Horn. Very classy gentleman and Clint Eastwood’s stunt double back in the day.
When they first told me our start position was inside the hut, in my mind, I questioned the safety factor of that. After you and I evaluated the inside and saw the explosives, within a milli-second, I recalled several situations involving accidental ignition of gas bombs and explosives on other film projects.
That was when i suggested we start our action on the outside, from behind the hut. Even though it was a controlled explosion and choreographed, I knew I was really in fact running for my safety. Feeling the heat and concussion, hearing the whiz of debris whizzing by my ear, I knew I did not take this stunt likely.
As you mentiioned, after we climbed out of our bunker. We looked to find what whizzied by my head, sure enough it was a piece of lumber, on fire with BIG NAILS protruding from it.
Thanks for being such a great partner on the stunt…..
always great to work with you Will… thanks for your generosity
