Imagine being born wearing green tinted glasses. Your entire life is seen through these glasses. Unconsciously, it would alter your entire sense of reality. Things you believed to be green in your reality, were in fact not green in truth.
An example of this is the story of three blind men who encounter an elephant for the first time. They attempt to learn about it by touch alone. The experience of each is unique because each touches a different part of the elephant. When they later discussed what an elephant is, they argued and argued. Each one insisted that he was correct.
We don’t see things as they really are. We see them as we are.
Young children view the world from acceptance. As we get older we view the world with judgments, ideals – shaped only by our own conditioning and limited experiences. These become filters or the “green tinted glasses” we perceive the world from.
This “filter” gives us a limited perception of “truth” which we mistakenly call “reality”.
In order to learn and experience new things more completely we must adhere to the old adage, “empty your cup.” No matter how much we “think” we know, in the scheme of things we actually know very little.
To see “truth” we must stay out of the ego and observe without judgment. In order to see things as they are we must purify ourselves. We must master ourselves. Only then can we see things as they truly are.
Practice humility. Allow yourself to truly learn and experience new things everyday. Everyone you come across knows something you don’t. Learn from them.
I use to be judgmental and stubborn. OK, maybe Im still a little stubborn
But this open perspective continues to shine more light on my experiences. I know it will for you too.
