How to Train Your “Inner” Dragon

Someone recently asked me what inspired my blog, which I’ve themed “How to Train Your Inner Dragon”.

I journal on occasion and over a year ago I started writing about inner peace. I’ve always been interested in psychology –  things related to human behavior, brain research, communication, and personal transformation. It’s fascinating how the mind and the universe works. I think what interests me the most is how all of this relates to the journey of life – self realization.

The quality of life highly depends on the quality of your relationships with others, and more importantly the relationship with yourself.

So I guess what specifically sparked the idea of my blog was the movie How to Train Your Dragon. When I first heard about the movie I figured it was just some animation film for kids. Then I started hearing great reviews, including from some of my friends in the movie business. So my wife and I went to see it on one of our “date nights.”

Without ruining the entire story, the movie is about an outcast kid living among a tribe of vikings. The vikings are haunted by killer dragons whom everyone fears. The dragons regularly attack the village leaving it in ruins every time. The viking right-of-passage is to ultimately become a dragon slayer.

But once understood and trained, these fearsome dragons turn out to be the vikings’ most powerful allies. The outcast kid with his out of the box approach, changes the paradigm of an entire way of life.

It’s a great metaphor for life’s inner demons, which we all have. If they aren’t faced and dealt with they can sabotage our lives, or at least greatly limit our potential. But unlike the traditional viewpoint of perceiving inner demons as a negative, I view them as something once conquered actually unlocks our true potential.

Being a Dragon by Eastern astrology, and living by martial arts philosophy, totally compliments my belief about inner demons and my interests in personal transformation. And, it all aligns perfectly with the universal pursuit of happiness in life’s journey of self discovery. Therefore, instead of inner demons, I call them Inner Dragons.

So this blog represents the inner dragons we face in our lives, (in ourselves), and how to “train” them. …And there’s also the occasional venting and more personal posts that I dare to share :)

Oh, if you haven’t seen the How to Train Your Dragon… go check it out!

I totally like this idea. I have come up with this idea on my own and have already started training my inner self who I have yet to know. Seems we have the same ideas.
