My Vegan Cats

Is it possible for a cat to be vegan? What about milk, cheese, chasing and eating mice and birds?

This is our cat who was VEGAN for the last 3 years of her life. She lived to be 14.

Her name was “Naluck”, (means fancy face in Thai). She was an rare exotic cat, a pure Egyptian Mau.

Most people don’t believe that a cat can be vegan. In fact, it was a vegan diet that saved Naluck’s life!!

She was having kidney failure and was in excruciating pain. She wouldn’t eat regular cat food and got to the point where she was just skin and bones.

Someone convinced my wife to put her on a vegan diet. Having cats her whole life, my wife was skeptical cause cats need taurine in their diet, which is normally animal based. But we had nothing to lose by trying since Naluck wouldn’t eat.

Once my wife changed her food, her health improved immediately – she gained weight, her fur became soft and glossy again and she pounced around just like a little kitten!! Pretty good for a 14 year old cat, huh?!

Last summer we lost Naluck. She escaped from the house and got hit by a car. My son found her in some bushes by the street where she was hit.

My wife was crushed. And my son had a tough time dealing with it too. Naluck grew up with the kids.

Several months later, someone we knew had a kitten and wasn’t able to take care of it. The lady named the kitten “Sunny”.

My wife took one look at Sunny and her heart melted.

Yeah, I pretty much didn’t have any say whether we we’re going to take in Sunny or not. But he’s so damn cute and has the coolest icy blue eyes.

Sunny is super feisty and has the softest politest ‘meow’ ever!! He’s super spunky and so soft. I softened up pretty quick.

He is also a healthy happy VEGAN! He actually loves avocados, coconut milk, nori seaweed, dates and pecans, popcorn, potato chips, sweet potatoes and is always wanting to try new “foods”. Yeah, crazy!

When given the choice between cat food made of meat and vegan cat food, he freely chooses vegan.

But the best part of all is….

His litter doesn’t stink like normal cats!!!

This alone is reason enough to feed your cat vegan food! Cat pee and poop has to be one of the nastiest, pungent stinks ever! But not Sunny’s!!

I’m glad you wrote on this subject! I once asked your advice about putting my dog on a vegan diet. I researched what I could and went to several pet food stores in search of a good vegan kibble. My first problem was staff who tried to persuade me I’d be responsible for killing my dog if I put him on a vegan diet. My second problem was reading the labels on the 2 products available and seeing the high fructose glucose and other chemical additives. We’ve had quite the trials. I feed him mainly brown rice, vegs, some fruit, and beans or tofu. He went through an enormous amount of gas. In frustration, during his annual vet exam, I asked her opinion about veganism and dogs and to my surprise she supported my efforts wholeheartedly. We’re still ironing out some problems but Kodo is almost vegan and my goal is to have him fully vegan by summer.
