The Inner Game of Martial Arts

Why do you train?  [To get in shape] or [To learn how to kick butt]?

If you train at any half-decent martial arts school, you’re gonna get in shape. Physical fitness is a by-product of martial arts practice. You get in shape by default!

What’s your true motivation for training? Is it physical fitness, self defense, discipline and focus, stress relief, emotional outlet, etc?

Ultimately, what you’re going for is self-confidence, right? It may come in the form of physical fitness, the feeling of being able to defend yourself, overcoming mental/physical challenges, or other forms of self esteem.

Martial arts practice, under the guidance of a world-class instructor, is arguably the best vehicle for personal growth. That translates into success into all areas of your life – health/wealth/happiness.

As you train and explore the arts, you will naturally be drawn to certain aspects of practice that appeal to you. Know what to look for in an instructor and a school.

Once you’ve chosen the right school/instructor, all you really have to do is show up and participate.

Create the habit of consistently getting yourself to class, (not just physically but mentally as well),  and the rest will take care of itself. Just take the first step.

The ways you approach your training will reveal the ways you handle aspects of your life. As your training evolves, and as you progress, many other aspects of your life will automatically improve simultaneously.

Remember, martial arts is fundamentally not a sport.  It’s a way of life. Martial arts philosophy exists in everything you do. It’s all a matter of mindset.

All students of martial arts should copy your last paragraph and examine it regularly, myself included!
