Studies show that the last 45 minutes of your day has a huge influence on the quality of your sleep and the quality of your next day.
Carefully monitor these last moments before you go to bed. Everything you read, listen to, see on tv, talk about, think about, and experience are imprinted into your consciousness.
This is why staying up late studying or working can make a big difference in your next day and watching scary movies before bed can give you nightmares. And, if you fall asleep while watching the news you’ll be imprinting into your consciousness all the war, crime, scandals, etc.
Subconsciously, this makes a big difference in our mood and influences our thoughts. As you drift to sleep you enter into the alpha brain wave state of consciousness where you are very suggestable.
How much better would it be to read an inspirational book , meditate, or plan the next day before you go to sleep?
Exercise
Before bed while in a relaxed state, sit with your eyes closed and debrief, or ask yourself a series of questions:
- Where could I have been more effective today?
- Where could I have been a better (manager, teacher, parent, person) today?
- Where could I have been more loving today?
- Where could I have been more assertive today?
- Etc.
While sitting in a state of receptivity, the day’s events will come to mind. Just observe them, without any kind of judgement or self-criticism. Don’t over think it. Allow it to come to you.
Then take each incident and visualize it the way you would have preferred to have done it. Notice the feeling that comes with that intention and instill that positive emotion into your visualization.
This helps program the desired behavior the next time a similar situation occurs.
Not to mention, it feels great!

It occurs to me that for some people, this might create a recursive loop of thought leading to insomnia…
